A little over a year ago, I posted about Piper Perabo's Twitter stalker/harasser, who has been trolling, bullying, and harassing her and her followers for over 2 full years now. My intent was to try to get the word out about how insanely pathetic Twitter's anti-abuse measures were. At the time I made that post, in July 2014, to even call them anti-abuse measures at all was laughable, because these theoretical "measures" didn't actually exist. Twitter had abuse policies, sure, but they were doing nothing to enforce them. Like, literally, at least in our case, nothing at all. Zip. Zilch. Nada. The policy was like, "Hey guys, don't do this stuff, k?" "Oh o.k. so you're doing it? O.k. Oh well."
Then, some high-profile harassment incidents started to happen. There was Robin Williams' daughter, and then there was GamerGate. GamerGate really helped propel Twitter's glaring problem into the media spotlight. And thankfully, it also embarrassed Twitter enough that they finally attempted to kinda sorta do something about it. Or, at least, it prompted them to say they were doing something about it. Eventually, then-CEO Dick Costolo blogged this statement:
That was in February. We waited for something to change after Costolo released that statement, and nothing did. In June, he resigned. What his departure means for the promise he made here, I have no idea. I did another Google search just now to see if Twitter has publicized any new anti-abuse measures, and this is what I found. Twitter's new Safety Center provides the exact same method for reporting abusive accounts as it always has, and it's a pain in the ass. It also does not account for the fact that TrollBoy changes his account names constantly, so reporting his usernames to Twitter is totally useless. And filling out this form for all of his HUNDREDS of accounts would take years. Articles have been written about this type of problem with Twitter's report forms for months and months and months now, and yet the form is still the same as it always was.
BUT ... wow this is crazy. Some stuff has been happening in regards to our TrollBoy issue even as I've been typing this post. O.k. hold up, I'll get to that in a sec, but first let me say this: My original intent was to come in here with an update that Twitter Support has actually, FINALLY, shockingly woken up lately and started to suspend some of TrollBoy's accounts again. This is the first movement on this issue that I've seen in over a year, and while it's still pretty half-ass and not all that effective, it's nice to at least see something happening again. Someone in Twitter's Support org seems to have noticed that TrollBoy exists, and about once a week, they've been going in and suspending at least some of his accounts. This has gone on for maybe 2-3 weeks now, and I fully expect that the lovely soul in Support who's been doing this will eventually lose interest or get a different job or something and we'll be S.O.L. again. So I'm trying to enjoy it while it lasts.
Here's the latest list of TrollBoy's accounts. These are just the ones he's created/used since my last update in late June 2015, which at the time I'm writing this was only 1.5 months ago:
NOTE: Holy shit. As I was typing this post, Twitter just went in and suspended a BUNCH more of the below accounts!! Wow. I am shocked and impressed. How long will this continue? Does it mean that Twitter has actually found a more effective algorithm for detecting abusive accounts? Is it recognizing multiple accounts from the same IP address? Or does it simply mean they've hired more support staff? I don't know. But I like this, and sweet Jesus I hope it continues. I'm trying not to get my hopes up though.

Only THREE of these accounts are still active right now!! That is insane. I don't think I've seen Twitter this on top of suspending TrollBoy's accounts in the entire 2+ years this issue has been going on. "Don't get your hopes up, don't get your hopes up ..." This is all I can say to myself to brace for the disappointment that is sure to come soon. Right? This is weird, dude. So, SO weird. Stay tuned.
